While a kitchen compost pail isn't absolutely necessary, it will save you from countless trips to the compost bin.
A good kitchen compost bin is small enough to be a convenient place to dump your kitchen waste and transport it to your outdoor compost bins. It should also prevent the smell of compost waste from taking over your kitchen.
One of two pails should fit your needs depending on your style preference and budget...
For a straightforward and relatively inexpensive kitchen compost pail, we recommend the
Compost Bin with Filter Lid for several reasons...
On the downside, its larger size and green color would make it an unattractive addition to your countertop (this thing's meant to be kept out of sight). It also has slightly flimsy hinges and handle connectors - not a big deal if you don't mistreat it too badly, but something to consider nonetheless.
All in all, a great kitchen compost pail for the money and our recommenation if you're looking for a larger odor-free pail.

For a fancier look and sturdier construction (albeit a higher price tag), the Stonewear Compost Pail is a great option. It comes in either black or white ceramic and includes two replaceable charcoal filters to keep the smells in (should be replaced every 3 months or so).
Its 11 inch (28 cm) height is the same as the pail reviewed above, but its 7 inch (18 cm) diameter means it has less capacity... a negative if you're looking for a larger pail but a positive if you want to leave it on your kitchen counter.
It also includes biodegradable liners that can be thrown into your compost pile with the contents which makes for easy cleaning and emptying.
